De verkoper vertelt
This little village on the edge of the dunes might just be one of the best-kept secrets in the Netherlands.
The first thing you notice is the green. Overveen is wrapped in trees, and the streets are quiet and calm in a way that feels increasingly rare. In the evenings I take long, peaceful walks through the neighbourhood, and it genuinely feels like the world slows down. There's no rush here, no noise - just leafy lanes, birdsong, and the soft light coming through the trees.
And yet, for all that calm, everything is astonishingly close. The beach at Zandvoort is just one train stop away - I can decide on a whim to watch the sunset over the North Sea and be standing on the sand fifteen minutes later. In the other direction, it's a seven-minute cycle straight into the heart of Haarlem, with its grand market square, cosy cafés, independent shops, and some of the prettiest old streets in the country. Amsterdam itself is only a short train ride beyond that, so even the big city is within easy reach whenever I want it - and just as easy to leave behind.
Then there's the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, which sits practically on my doorstep. A five-minute walk up the road and I'm in a landscape of rolling dunes, pine forest, and open heath. I go running through the forest trails there, and in summer I can swim in the dune lake.
Overveen gives you sea, forest, dunes, and city all within minutes of each other, yet the village itself stays tranquil.
